A milk factory, Creambell Mauritius Private LTD, will start operating in December. This factory will be producing dairy products such as butter and yogurt. Moreover, it will cater for home-delivery of fresh local milk. The milk will be pasteurized by high-tech machines from Europe and India. Rs 380 millions will be invested in the rearing of dairy cows and the construction of the dairy in Salazie on a 1,7-acre plot of land.

Rajiv Sant, the director of Creambell Mauritius Private LTD, explains: ?The milk we will produce will be as good as the one Mauritians are used to. The difference is that the customer can get his milk delivered at home in the morning before going to work.? The Board of Investment gave him the investment certificate last Tuesday.

The production should be around 15,000 litres per day. Rajiv Sant is planning to import some 300 dairy cows from Australia and New Zealand to start with. This number will be increased a few months later if everything goes according to plan. Yet another increase is possible if there is more demand.

The idea of setting up such an enterprise came up in September 2005 following a market research. This project will be beneficial for the country in two ways. First it will bring about the creation of some 200 jobs. It will alsoenable the country to save more on imported dairy products which now cost around Rs 1 billion.
