John Cabrelli
A man with no frontiers
His eyes sparkle when it comes to Miles Davis, Jimmie Hendrix or Nirvana : John Cabrelli, business driver at Arcasa, a furniture department store in the Quality Living Centre in Phoenix, is, in spite of appearances, a passionate man. He does agree that music has no frontiers, but he would have felt even happier if he could practise it properly, though one guesses from his participation in local music groups that he plays the guitar better than he pretends.
John was raised in Scotland, his parents having migrated from Italy to that scenic land of cliffs and countryside, settling finally in Laurencekirk, near Aberdeen (to help our local football geographers) in the North East. He is a true son of Scotland, not just because of his slight accent, but because he enjoyed all the aspects of life in rural society. ?In my youth, I used to pick daffodils to sell for my pocket money. I also worked in the potato fields, where the famous King Edward variety is produced. There I developed a kind of expertise at identifying the good potatoes and separating them from the ?rogue? ones. This activity allowed me to have resources to travel over the world. They were also unique experiences of social interaction between workers, as we entertained each other.?
So, with the money collected, John travelled abroad as a true citizen of the world, were it in the Americas or in the land of his father, Italy, or elsewhere. Meanwhile, he would still reply with the same enthusiasm to the prospect of harvesting grapes in Champagne, near Reims in France. Just imagine, from the early morning in the realm of Bacchus, preparing the way for the nectar of joy to come. Curiosity always had the final say.
Later, when John, who never lost track of time as a valuable (he did his London marathon in 1984 in 2 hours 57 minutes and 12 seconds), would have on his shoulders the task of managing the credit system for Mammouth Mauritius in 1994, he never lost his appetite for exploration.
A member of the Hash House Harriers, he naturally discovered our countryside and has a sound knowledge of the beauty of the island. Here he also met the woman he married. After a gap of two and a half years, when he went to Indonesia to be responsible for sourcing furniture and high quality exotic wood, John came back in 1997. Perhaps more than a halt this time. But John is still exploring the musical spheres?
