An elderly shopper takes a lucky bag costing 10,000 yen (about $85) at the beginning of the New Year sales in a Tokyo department store.
More than 12,000 people queued to buy lucky bags at the department store. The sale of lucky bags is an annual tradition organised by department stores in Japan, where sealed bags are prepared by stores and sold at a price lower than the value of the items held in the bags. Shoppers buy the bags without knowing their contents.
