<B>Caricaturist Abdul Kalla’s versatile gift once more rewarded </B>
In the context of its “Upfront and personal” exhibition, which showcased a variety of artistic, social and political graphics, from the UK, South Africa and Mauritius, including a retrospective, but not exhaustive, series of renowned local caricaturists, the British Council launched a caricature competition on the theme “The Mauritian political scene in the year 2026”.
It met with considerable response from young and experienced contributors.
A distinguished guest, Sir David Green (R), director general of the British Council, was present at the prize-giving ceremony at the Quality Living Centre (QLC), Castel on Friday. In the first category, (ages 15 to 21), Gibraël Bandoo won the first prize and Abdul Kalla (L) was rewarded in the over-21 category. He won a computer system and young Gibraël Bandoo was awarded a design-related visit to the UK. The jury, composed of Mike Plumb, Deputy-High Commissioner, Rosalind Burford, Director, British Council (Mauritius), Maggie Dowlut, Education and Creativity Manager, Nicholas Powell, Graphic Designer, also from the British Council, Yvan Martial, director of “Répertoire de la presse mauricienne”, Vino Sookloll, director of Cread and president of the Association of advertising agents, Thivy Naidoo, director of Mauritius National Art Gallery and Y. Abdullatiff, administrative manager of QLC, chose the winners. Seven runner-up candidates won mobile phones (sponsored by Emtel). The event was organised by Odysseus Public Relations Agency.
