SP Raddhooa has so far unveiled one of the mysteries among a series he had promised to solve soon after being reinstated and promoted head of criminal investigation. After having gone missing for more than two years, Uma Ujodha?s remains were finally found in a septic tank in her garden in Vacoas, last week.

This discovery was made possible after her husband confessed that he had killed her after a violent fight in May 2003. Raddhoa had arrested Choodramanee Ujodha a few weeks ago because he was convinced that the man had something to do with the disappearance of his wife. He had at the same time arrested the man?s mistress, who confessed that she had in a sense been his accomplice. After killing his wife, he had come to fetch her to help him clean the place and dispose of the corpse in the septic tank.

Extra-marital relationship</B>

Ujodha finally confessed his crime after his lawyer, Zakir Mohamed, advised him to tell everything he knew about his wife?s sudden disappearance. However he insists that it was an accident and that he never intended to kill her. He claims that in the fight he pushed her to the ground and she knocked her head, the blow causing her death. Then, he panicked and threw the body into the septic tank.

However, the examination of the remains tends to show that there was foul play. Forensic scientist, Dr Satish Boolell, believes the victim had an important haemorrhage before she died.

Moreover, Uma?s shirt, discovered next to her remains, contained marks of a knife. She could well have been stabbed to death. The police should learn more after the toxicological tests at the Forensic Science Laboratory.

The versions of Uma?s husband and of one of the victim?s family are very different. While Uma?s husband asserts he was a battered man and that he suspected his wife of having an extra-marital relationship, the victim?s parents are adamant that Choondramanee was violent and had various mistresses during his marriage with Uma.

Santee Buldaho, Uma?s mother, explains: ?They constantly quarrelled on that matter (editor?s note: the extra-marital relationships of Choodramanee) and Uma often left her house and came home because of that.? Uma had finally asked for a divorce. On the day he reported to the police that his wife was missing, the couple was supposed to go to the Supreme Court concerning the divorce case.

As for Uma?s sister, Vishwanee, it was clear to her that she had not gone away with a lover. Uma had three children ? two of whom were handicapped - and it was out of the question that she would leave the house without them. Many of the couple?s fights were linked to the children?s custody.
