Rs 900-million spinning mill to fill denim gap
The textile industry still has a future, as the decision of RS Group to invest Rs 900 million in a spinning mill proves. Its construction has started in La Tour Koenig and should be ready by June 2006. This spinning mill is aimed at solving the lack of denim which a lot of local jeans producers are facing. The new factory should produce 18 million metres of denim every year.
As the sixth spinning mill of the island, the factory will employ 650 people. RS Group is the owner of RS Fashion, a jeans manufacturer. The manager, Ram Mardemootoo, explains that he has decided to set up his own spinning mill in view of the difficulties that RS Fashion has to face in denim supply. “The global local demand is estimated at Rs 20 million metres every year. The only spinning mill in the country is Ital Denim, which produces about 10 million metres.”
To solve the problem, the companies are importing from other countries. RS Fashion, for instance, has been importing its denim from Lesotho. But such a practice takes time, which causes a delay in delivery. “But we can’t afford to continue like this. Today, in the clothing industry, the biggest competitive advantage is the shortest possible delivery deadline. The price comes only after,” Ram Mardemootoo explains.
With its new spinning mill, the group’s priority is to supply local producers but it also plans to export denim to Madagascar, Kenya and eventually Europe.
