The Rs 51.8 million hold-up and murder of Gérald Lagesse at the Mauritius Commercial Bank (MCB) on 11th February looks more and more difficult to untangle. There seem to be as many versions of the story as people allegedly involved in the crime. Steve Monvoisin?s revelation on the presence of a so-called Laval B. in the bank vault and his active participation in the hold-up and murder contradicts Jiawed Ruhumatally?s version.

The latter, one of the main suspects in the tragedy, said, in his statement to the police, that Gérald Lagesse was actually an accomplice in the plot for the hold-up and that his death was purely accidental. With Steve Monvoisin?s new statements, this does not hold water anymore. The question remains: who is telling the truth?

According to Steve Monvoisin, Laval B was the first one to enter the main vault of the MCB. He also asserts that the customer service supervisor didn?t know anything about what would happen. Somehow, the statement seems to be aimed at showing that Monvoisin was not really keen on committing the crime especially when he speaks of Gérald Lagesse?s assault. He says he was shocked by the way Ruhumatally and Laval B. attacked the customer service supervisor. He makes it clear that Laval B. was also at the origin of Lagesse?s death. He allegedly told Ruhumatally to stuff his mouth with papers.

This latest statement is very disturbing as it may unveil a whole new version. However, the problem is that the police are relying on suspected criminals? versions to shed light on the case. Of course, if they?re involved in the crime, they are undoubtedly in a position to give details. However, they must also be more than tempted to save their own skins at any cost?
