Opposition leader insists on ?major fraud? at MCB
The government?s troubles do not seem over yet with the opposition leader?s insistent questions regarding what he calls a ?major fraud? at the Mauritius Commercial Bank (MCB). Navin Ramgoolam asserts that the N?Tan report reveals ?other substantial and significant frauds and irregular transactions that have taken place.?
Despite regular assertions by prime minister Paul Bérenger that he is absolutely not aware of the report?s content, Navin Ramgoolam continues to claim that there have been ?major frauds? and that the PM must have been informed of this report. The opposition leader also wonders about the article published in l?express and aimed at giving more details about the Rs 1.5 billion case, which Ramgoolam called a fraudulent transaction. The report actually reveals the process the bank used to get round the credit ceiling imposed by the Bank of Mauritius between 1987 and 1991. This was done without the bank?s customers being aware - the bank was transferring money from their accounts for a while to those of other customers. Ethically, the bank has been wrong in allowing such transfers to occur.
The truth about this 1.5 billion has not been revealed so far and the best way of unveiling the mystery would be to publish the N?Tan report. It would show whether there has been any ?cover-up? or not.
But the opposition leader does not stop there; he expresses his concern over the recent hold-up and murder at the MCB. ?No one knows who the main beneficiary is, how much money has been lost and if money was stolen on the day of the crime or before?? He also finds it odd that the BOM has not found it necessary to open its own investigation into this hold-up. In other words, the opposition leader suspects ?another cover-up?.
One thing is sure: the opposition leader has not finished with the PM yet. He intends to take the matter further in Parliament today? Moreover, the prime minister has announced that he will make a statement on both the MCB/NPF case and the MCB hold-up. This should give rise to another fiery debate?
