Now that Nadine Chaton and James Mardi have spoken out, the public may be able to form its own opinion. Who?s telling the truth? Who?s lying? Each has accused the other of telling lies. Finally, could they both have been victims of their own naivety, as they blindly believed in one another. They were both released on bail after being provisionally charged with conspiracy to give false evidence and pervert the course of justice.

After saying she was present on the site where Nadine Dantier was raped and killed and could describe her ?three attackers?, she is now adamant: ?I only dreamt that three people were raping a girl or a woman in a wood.? She says she related the story to the police ? while not revealing that it was only a dream ? because she ?didn?t want to damage Mardi?s reputation.? She now feels desperate. ?It happened so quickly. I?ve the impression that Mardi trapped me. He?s home with his wife and kids and I?ve lost everything.?

But James Mardi doesn?t go back on the information he gave his superiors. Her ?story seemed and still seems plausible to me. The way she described the attack was too convincing. I think the police should follow up this lead but it?s up to them...?

However, he doesn?t want to deny or confirm if he had a love affair with Nadine Chaton. ?I?ll keep this for my defence. I can?t say anything on this matter.? But he insists that he was not in Albion on the fateful day. As for the young woman, she thinks she has been trapped by James Mardi. ?He?s telling everyone that I took revenge because he had left me. I think if he had some feeling for me, he wouldn?t have behaved like that.?

James Mardi, for his part, says he was only doing his job, ?At the end of June, I informed my superiors that I had some information that could shed some light on Nadine Dantier?s murder.? He explains he had no reason to invent such a story. He insists he was not the one who led to suspect Azie?s arrest and his ?reward has been six days? detention!

The snag is that the Dantier case is still far from solved, leaving her family in total despair. Nadine Chaton has expressed her regrets, ?I understand Caroline Dantier?s pain. I also have a daughter. I understand her. But I?ve never accused her husband formally.? The investigation is back to square one and the public is now waiting for the DNA test results ? that might shed light on at least some aspects of the case ? from South Africa. Still waiting.
