A morbid puzzle unravelling
The heroin seizure in Vacoas has turned out to be much more than a drug affair. This scandal may include intimidation missions, murder attempts or instructions to commit murder. This is what Antoine Chetty alleged shortly after his arrest for heroin trafficking. He said the drug actually belonged to his employer, notary Vinay Deelchand. He then declared that the latter was responsible for some ten illegal activities all linked to the same motive: fraudulent land transactions.
The driver alleges that notary Deelchand is the ?godfather? of a mafia network that has committed all these crimes. The latter started his activities when he was a clerk at notary Rajkumar Lallah?s. The driver explains that notary Deelchand has set up a gang composed of Antoine Chetty himself and Veeren Moonsamy Mooraghen, a businessman. They have apparently mastered the art of swindling people of humble origin out of their plots of land, using scenarios that would make the best crime films look pale in comparison.
According to the testimony of a victim mentioned by Antoine Chetty, one of their methods of operation is the following: they contact the heirs of a person who has just died. They explain that the deceased person wanted to sell his/her plot of land. They then offer money to the family and get them to sign a proxy to allow the notary or the two others to sell the land. The notary calls on fake experts to counterfeit the signatures.
An anonymous letter by a ?senior lawyer and ex-victim? sent to the police seems to confirm these allegations. ?Bribe the local council and others and? Abracadabra? you have a morcellement in quick time,? says the letter. This document made it clear that the police would soon be opening a Pandora?s box? In other words, a certain number of disappearances or deaths could be linked to the notary. It is expected that some ?victims? will gradually come out of anonymity and that the morbid puzzle will start unravelling?
The author of the anonymous letter warned that Deelchand could offer millions to escape from this situation. ?Now that the self-proclaimed godfather has been denounced and the prayers of his numerous victims answered, one hopes that the police will do, and will be allowed to do, its job without fear and without any attempts to influence them or bribe them.?
According to his former employee, Deelchand was ready to eliminate all those who were in his way. He is said to have had a hit list of people he wished to get rid of. The lawyer Shakeel Mohamed was one of them. The latter had defended a monk who was given a false contract for a piece of land. The notary was asked to pay thousands of rupees in compensation.
The mysterious kidnapping and disappearance of Ismaël Doba one year ago could also be solved with the uncovering of this mafia network with Deelchand as alleged godfather. A mystery around his former boss, notary Lallah?s death could also be cleared up. The latter?s daughter, Anju, is Antoine Chetty?s partner and she was also arrested when the police found heroin at their home. However, both the driver and Anju Lallah herself have claimed that she has nothing to do with drug trafficking.
A so-called Philippe Calou also says he has experienced the notary?s anger. Antoine Chetty and Veeren Moonsamy Mooraghen made various intimidation attempts to extract a class-one plot of land from him. As he always maintained that this piece of land was not his, he says he was stabbed. He seems certain that the two men would have killed him two years ago if he had not given the alert.
The other member of the ?gang?, Veeren Moonsamy Mooraghen, was arrested last week. He was to appear in Court with notary Deelchand in a fraud case. As soon as he arrived, the police arrested him in the light of Antoine Chetty?s allegations. The latter pointed out that the businessman and himself had been asked by Deelchand to commit a crime. Both of them may have to defend themselves in numerous criminal cases if the police succeeds in collecting all the evidence.
In the beginning, Antoine Chetty only accused his boss of drug trafficking. As soon as the police arrested him, he said the heroin belonged to notary Deelchand, who had given it to him to keep before leaving for Madagascar. The latter was thus provisionally accused of ?supplying heroin with aggravating circumstances.?
One of the questions that comes to mind is: why was the driver so eager to reveal everything to the police? He has said so far that he had scruples and that he wanted the truth to be made public. However, Antoine Chetty is no angel himself... The real question is? what happened between the driver and his boss.
