"We need more than a day in the year dedicated to old people!"
I was born in India and I am fortunate enough to have lived in Mauritius and London. I have also visited Katmandu and the surrounding regions. I am in a position therefore to compare Mauritius with Nepal both being third world countries, unlike London.
Mauritius and Nepal are both dependent on tourism for their main foreign exchange but Mauritius as a democratic country has a well-developed infrastructure in banking, transport, finance while Nepal has no such advantages because it is still an authoritarian monarchy.
Apart from that, Nepal is a beautiful place to visit. Whilst it has no surrounding sea hence no water sports, it is unique in its trekking facilities. A walk by the mountainside overlooking the gently winding river down the valley and gazing so very high up to the impressive glaciers above is awe- inspiring. The majority of people in Nepal and in Mauritius are Hindus and poor but Nepal differs in particular as it is the only Hindu state in the world, unlike India and Mauritius which are secular states.
I have been also asked about my impressions on the UN Day for pensioners. It?s the first time I hear of a day dedicated to old people. It?s nice to know, as I am one of them. Last Sunday was that day. It is necessary nowadays to acknowledge the existence of old people because the advance in medicine and improved health care over the world make people live longer. In fact we should have more than a day in the year dedicated to old people! It might encourage the young to help and respect the old and also realize that they will become old one day.
A special day by the United Nations for the older generation is a jolly good idea. All I can say is: Cheers to Pensioners!
