?How can I help my brother ??
I am a 27 year old single girl, still living at home with my parents. I have a kid brother who is nearly 17 years old. We have never been very close. I have a feeling that he is just embarking on his sexual life, a sort of sexual awakening. I noticed that all the whispering and giggling with friends are connected very much the opposite sex. I would obviously like him to have a very responsible attitude whenever he starts dating girls.
It is a very delicate topic and I am really at a lost on how to approach the subject. I doubt whether my parents are in a position or even willing to talk to him about sex and all its implications. By nature, he is a good boy with his head firmly on his shoulders but I worry. Do you think that I am worrying unduly? How should I go about it in dealing with the situation? I care for him and want the best for him. Please help me and guide me in what I should do. Thank you.

I would like to congratulate you on your very responsible attitude. I can appreciate your predicament and you have a very awkward situation to negotiate. Unfortunately, people find it difficult to talk about sex, which has been considered far too long to be taboo.
Even now, we hear couples who have refused to talk about problems that have lasted for years and at times have brought them to the brink of separation. So for you to think of the well being of your younger brother is very laudable. Obviously, there has never been that closeness between your brother and you for whatever reasons.
It could be the age gap though it is not always the case. Each of you could have been so involved with your respective activities that there has been little chance of any sibling bonding. Mind it is never too late but it is not going to be the easiest of subject to start with. In Mauritius, I have advocated continuously for a system of sexual education in our learning institutions. I am still awaiting for some developments with baited breath. Regarding the conversation you are going to have with your brother, it is advisable that you find a place where there is less likely to be any sort of interruptions, perhaps to invite him for a meal in a very secluded place. I feel that the best way to broach the subject would perhaps to talk about yourself. May be there is a lot of catching up to do. The foundations need to be clearly laid out before you get to the subject in question.
You could start by talking of the puppy love that you had at college, the crushes that you had on your friends and perhaps your teachers at time! That should help him to know and understand you better. Talk about romances you have had and those you nearly had and perhaps those you wish you had.
The mere fact that you are talking openly about your own relationship will put him at ease, will indicate to him that love is something wonderful but one must be responsible as well. It might help him to be more confident to share with you whatever he feels like.
It might be the start of a closer relationship between brother and sister. Disclosing and sharing might be a slow process but at least it is a start or conversely he might feel that he can share his feelings of any topic with you more readily because you have shown that you trust him by sharing your past experiences. Either way, it would have made him more clued in and hopefully more responsible.
