? I am planning to leave my husband for my lover ?

I am M and married to N for the past 15 years. I work in a well known company and hold a highly responsible position. I have been doing the same job since leaving university. My husband is 42 years old and works as a sales representative. He works long hours. We have a son aged 14 years old who is very close to his father. We both earn good wages and our standard of living is quite good. All that sounds very good, I should be extremely happy in my marriage, the truth is that I am not. My situation is rather complicated because for the past three years I have been having an affair with one of my colleagues. He is divorced since eight years. He is about the same age as my husband. I feel that it is the loneliness that drove me to this affair. My lover and I have decided to buy a house and live together. I feel that I should go ahead as I am so unhappy. I also feel that I need to do that for the sake of my son so that he can be happy too. What do you think? Am I right to be thinking in that way? At times, I feel that this is the right way and other times I feel different. One thing for sure, stay or go I have no intention to give up my lover. I hope that you will be able to point me in the right direction. I thank you for your help.

M.

You hope that I will point you in the right direction that is how you conclude your letter. I feel that our views might be diametrically opposite when it comes to decide what is the right direction. For a start, you have made it abundantly clear that immaterial what I say, you will continue your involvement with your lover. Probably it is very true that you have been feeling very lonely as a result of the continuous absence of your husband. Do you really feel that having an affair will solve your marital problems?

You have decided that your future happiness lies in the company of your lover, that has been first and foremost in your mind and probably still is. You are determined to let your heart rule your head and go ahead with your plans regardless of what anybody says. For example, you have decided that the happiness of your son also lie in your future domestic arrangements that you have planned with your lover. I do not necessarily think that your son will find happiness away from the family?s home, what of his father? Will he miss his father? What does he have to say?

You have made all the decisions unilaterally, a sure recipe for heartaches and conflicts. I do not know exactly what are the factors that have influence your decisions. I feel that you have found the attention and affection that has been lacking in your marriage in the arms of your lover. Have you seriously thought about the physical and emotional upheavals that you are likely to cause to your son by your decision? May be your lover is putting pressure on you to make a decision after being together for the past three years. I am not telling you that you should stay or leave your husband.

Only you can take this decision but it must be a rational one based on facts, based on ensuring the future happiness of your son. I feel that you should think your position through and you need to discuss the whole situation with your husband and your son, especially the latter because what he wants must be taken into consideration. His life will be turned upside down if you follow through with your decision. So I would suggest the following steps that will help to see and review your situation clearly and hopefully that will help you to make a decision that will be more acceptable to all the parties concerned. Probably somebody will get hurt along the way, that may be difficult not to say impossible to prevent but at least all parties especially your son and your husband would have been consulted.

You need to put your affair on hold temporarily to help you think with a clear and open mind. I am sure that your lover will understand if he really cares for you. I also feel that you should take time to discuss your marital problems. Perhaps your husband could do more to reduce his long working hours, may be he could show a more caring attitude. He has a fair share of blame but clearly, it demonstrates how a lack of communication can lead to more complex problems. As far as your son is concerned, at 14 years old, he is quite grown up and should have an active say in his life not just have decisions taken on his behalf. Whether you stay or go is your choice but please do let your heart rule your head.
