Unexpected support for state empowerment programme
While harsh criticisms were expected at the St-Louis mass last Friday – especially on education – the clergy made a plea for the budget presented by Rama Sithanen two months ago and more specifically for its “empowerment programme”.
The bishop of Port-Louis, Maurice Piat, in his welcome address, called it a “message of hope” for the most vulnerable. Likewise, Father Alain Romaine, in his homily, made it clear that the government was giving the chance to the underprivileged to get out of a difficult situation but they also have to do their part. He also seized the opportunity to send a message to the government on its education reform. “The 40% of children who fail at the CPE exams have to be empowered by a system that acknowledges their potential.”
But the prime minister, Navin Ramgoolam, will not hold it against the priest, “The comments on education did not bother me. They are right to say what they have to say,” he commented. This annual mass that celebrates Saint-Louis, king of France and patron of the diocese and of politicians, is an opportunity for the Catholic church to invite the head of the State and the political leaders and to pray for them and for the country. The President of the Republic, the prime minister and members of the government were present.
The government must have been relieved by this unexpected support after the wind of opposition that is blowing over the country.
