UN blames AIDS for southern Africa food shortages
The relentless toll of HIV/AIDS means southern Africa faces more food shortages this year, with some 3 million people in need of aid despite improved harvests, the UN World Food Programme said yesterday.
Southern Africa is the epicentre of the global HIV/AIDS epidemic, with some countries estimated to have more than 30 percent of adults infected with the virus. South Africa alone has an estimated five million HIV-positive people.
“ As long as HIV/AIDS remains at such epic proportions throughout southern Africa, a large number of people will face severe hardship unless international assistance is provided.”
The UN food agency said it needed $85 million to provide food assistance for some three million people in southern Africa.
