<I>In charge of “Education à la Vie et à l’Amour (EVA)”</I>
● <B>What is the role of EVA?</B>
EVA is a training centre for adults. We train them for one year on sex education and relationships and make it possible for them to go towards young people in the different schools of the country. We intend to go towards the different schools in distant areas in the near future. The aim is to reach the maximum number of schools but we have realised that Catholic schools are the main ones who come to look for training with us. It is very rare for state schools – which is a pity. We would like teachers of all schools to be trained in order to answer pupils’ questions.
● <B>What are the observations of teachers when they go back to school to educate pupils?</B>
Young people – especially at the secondary level – already have quite a lot of information gathered from the Internet or through newspapers. However, we often realise that pupils do not know the basics of their own bodies and may consequently use them badly.
● Do you educate them on the potential dangers of sex as well?</B>
Of course, we talk of sexually transmitted diseases, abortion, drugs and alcohol. In fact, we deal with everything in relation to real life and values.
● Do you also provide training for primary teachers?</B>
Of course we do. And we realise that teachers now need to be trained as from Standard III. While we used to train teachers of Standard 6 a few years back, teachers now tell us that they are starting to have questions from pupils as from six years old – even before in some cases. Of course, this implies that we must adopt a completely different approach with these pupils. The answers will be the same but we adopt a different approach at different ages.
