The pupils with the best results in Mandarin for the Certificate of Primary Education, School Certificate and Higher School Certificate were awarded a prize last Sunday at the Nam Shun Society in Port-Louis. The event, organised by the Mauritius China University Students Association and the Mandarin Teachers? Association in collaboration with the Chinese Cultural Centre, gathered important personalities from the Chinese embassy and educational institutions in Mauritius.

The officer of the ministry of Education said he was amazed by the development of the Chinese culture that has remained the same despite the invasion of Western culture. He was particularly impressed by the respect for elders and the love for well-done work ? known as the pillars of this culture. His few words in Hakka were very appreciated by the audience.

This event was also an opportunity for the Chinese ambassador, Gao Yuchen, to express his appreciation that the government has created an environment conducive for the preservation of Chinese culture.

The official ceremony was followed by songs and dances by pupils of several institutions involved in the teaching of Mandarin.
