Review of the week

● Rising prices for basic products ? While milk is already seen as being extremely expensive, its price should undergo another major increase in October. Powdered milk will probably rise by 30%. Importers and traders made it clear that the high price is an international issue and that they have no power to do otherwise. There is already a beginning of shortage of milk on the market and the situation could worsen with the coming rise. The price of oil should also rise. However, importers said they would do everything to try and not penalise consumers by the rise on the international market. The rise of wheat prices is another concern for the authorities. But they have no control on external factors that explain these hikes in pries.

● Woochit faces protests ? After the announcement by Jayraj Woochit that he would start building works on îlot Gabriel, the environmental movements have raised the alarm bell. They are afraid that such work may put in jeopardy the already weak unique endemic species on the island. Other criticisms point at the low fee Jayraj Woochit pays for his lease. He intends to set up amenities as well as a grill on the islet. Tourists will pay Rs 400 including the access to the island and a picnic lunch while Mauritians would not pay any fees. The sailors, who take tourists on their catamarans, are protesting against ?unfair competition?.

● On a stretcher? ? Sir Harry Tirvengadum, one of the accused in the trial for fund embezzlement of Air Mauritius, arrived in Court on a stretcher last Tuesday. Magistrates had issued an arrest warrant against him after he did not turn up in Court on several occasions. Despite his doctors? certificates and testimonies that he was not fit to appear, the magistrates insisted on seeing him. He arrived in Court in an ambulance and could not answer the magistrates? questions. He was obviously under the effect of medicines.
