Review of the week
■ Two arrested for rape. Two men have been arrested for the rape of a teenager in Flic-en-Flac last Sunday. The two men, 42 and 19, have confessed the crime. The police were able to identify and arrest the suspects because they had been filmed by a security camera at a filling-station in Flic-en-Flac. The rape occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning. The 17 year-old victim and her boyfriend were on the public beach in Flic-en-Flac when they were approached by four men. The latter threatened the couple at knife-point before proceeding to rape the young lady. Their two accomplices are still at large.
■ Opposition stage walkout. The opposition illustrated their ire with the Education minister?s handling of last week?s floods by staging a "walkout" of Parliament. A few minutes after the resumption of last Tuesday?s sitting, Showkutally Soodhun of Mouvement socialiste mauricien stood up to voice his anger at Dharam Gokhool?s refusal to submit his resignation in the wake of Laura Paul?s death. The opposition blames the Education minister for the 13 year-old student?s death after his ministry failed to take the necessary precautions, namely by closing schools because of the torrential rains. "I am a father and I understand that family?s pain", Showkutally Soodhun thundered. Opposition MPs echoed Soodhun?s sentiments by shouting in unison, "He should have resigned" before getting up and leaving.
