● Prisoners express themselves. The situation may be even tenser in prisons. After the incidents a few days ago where the head of the civil service had addressed detainees and the letter sent by the commissioner of prisons to say he was not aware of the alleged faux-pas of his officers, detainees took it out on prison officers again last Tuesday. Every week, detainees have the possibility of expressing themselves thanks to a small box in the prison courtyard. This week, the complaints targeted prison officers more particularly. Detainees accused them of drug trafficking, illegal bookmaking, brutality and dispensing vile food? The management of prisons said it would take action while officers point at a plot against them. They feel they have less power and detainees take advantage of this situation.
● Executives pessimistic. Even high wage earners ? between Rs 30,000 and Rs 100,000 ? will not be spending lavishly for their end-of-year shopping. This is the main conclusion of a survey by PluriConseil with executives. They said they would be cautious about their shopping and will not increase their consumption during the festive period. Moreover, the survey makes it clear that a large part of those questioned believe their financial situation will get worse within the next three months.
The people questioned say they will favour the quality-price rapport.
● Mobile phone tariffs go down. The tariffs of mobile phone calls will decrease as from the 1st December. While this drop was expected to be effective as from November, operators have put pressure and asked the Information and Communication Technologies Authority (Icta) to postpone the tariff reduction. However, even if mobile users will have to wait a little longer, it will be worth the effort, as the decrease is expected to be substantial. The calls between land lines and mobile ones will be particularly affected by this reduction.
