<B>Alleged rapist found!</B>
After three days of searching, the alleged rapist of the 16 year-old girl in Curepipe was found in Richeterre and provisionally charged with rape. Noël Milazar, 28, is a habitual criminal. The alleged victim said she was raped while her boyfriend was tied to a chair in the bedroom next door in a house in Curepipe. The victims said they were walking near the George V stadium when a man threatened them with a cutter and asked them to follow him into a house. This is where the victim said she was raped before the man ran away. The chief police medical officer has examined her and confirmed that she has been raped – but the police are not sure whether the man really stopped them in the street or surprised them while they were already in the house.
Bungalow owners sue the State</B>
Bungalow owners have got together to fight against the measures announced in the budget. The Association of Campement Owners and Users (ACOU) has lodged a complaint in the Supreme Court against the State for what they consider unconstitutional measures. Its 730 members dispute some measures of the Finance Act 2006, the amendments brought to the Pas Géométriques Act and to the Land (Duties and Taxes) Act as well as some measures in the National Residential Property Tax. The zoning and premiums demanded by the state are some of the complaints.
<B>Safety reinforced at the airport</B>
The government has invested Rs 79 million in safety equipment at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam airport. The installation of 179 surveillance cameras came at the right moment, as travellers have become more anxious after the discovery of the conspiracy to attack aircraft in London a few days ago. The cameras, which work on a 24-hour basis, cover the whole area of the airport. A team of six persons are responsible for the surveillance and they have high-tech equipment to communicate with security agents in case of problems.
Brand new building for MBC</B>
The Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) will move to a brand new building in Ebène within the next two years. The work on the new building, financed by the Chinese embassy, will start by the end of the year. The director general, Bijaye Madhoo, feels it is of considerable importance that the MBC moves from Forest-Side as there is a lack of space. The new building, which will be much bigger, will include more studios, archives and a training centre. The building in Forest-Side will then become an archive and training centre.
