Budget deficit at stake</B>
The budget deficit has been facing tough times for quite a long time but the minister of Finance, Rama Sithanen, has decided to take action. No job will be allocated in the pu-blic service for a few months. However, education and health sectors will be spared as the public ? students and patients more specifically ? can?t pay the consequences for the government?s decision. It will bring many changes in the way some public institutions work. The police force will be particularly affected but they have already said that this will cause no problems. Trade unions have however shown disagreement with the proposal, as they believe it will ?affect the way the welfare state is working?.
<B>Chetty scared of SP Raddhoa</B>
Detainee Antoine Chetty says he fears for his life since SP Prem Raddhoa paid him a visit in prison. According to Chetty?s relatives, SP Raddhoa threatened him and ordered him to confess his guilt in several cases ? Ackmez Aumeer, Bassin-Blanc, Dobah and the death of Anju Lallah?s father. However, the head of the Major Crime Investigation Team (MCIT) firmly denies these accusations. However he confirms he saw Chetty to ask him about Ismaël Dobah?s disappearance as a suspect arrested gave Chetty?s name. As Chetty has been asking that his lawyer be present before giving any statement, SP Raddhoa agreed that the next questioning will be done in his lawyer?s presence.
Dead taximan in burnt car</B>
He had been missing for two days. His burnt body was finally found in his car last Wednesday. The autopsy revealed that taxi driver Dharamraj Tengur died following extensive burns. His son, Vikash, was the one to identify the body but he could only do so thanks to a chain his father was wearing. The Central Investigation Division has opened an enquiry; they do not understand how such a fire could go unnoticed while some houses are located at only 100 metres from the place where the car caught fire. The victim leaves a wife and two children.

93% of Mauritians think that the press plays a positive role in the country. Hence, the rise in the number of people reading newspapers is not really surprising. A survey by Taylor Nelson Sofres reveals that the number of people reading a daily has increased by 4% while weekly readership has risen by 3%. L?express retains its top position before Le Mauricien and Le Matinal. For weeklies, Week-End is still the first followed by 5-Plus Dimanche ? which has gone up by 4% - and l?express-dimanche whose readership has also increased by 4%. As for radios, even if Radio-Plus still leads in front of Radio One, the gap is tending to narrow as the latter?s popularity grows.
