Queen?s rebel sister a royal riot in British movie
It?s difficult at the best of times to sympathize with anyone born into the lap of luxury, especially a twice-married princess with a predilection for cigarettes, booze and bed hopping. But ?The Queen?s Sister,? Channel 4?s biopic about the late Princess Margaret, manages the trick because of some clever writing and a great title performance by Lucy Cohu.
The TV movie begins with the caution that some of what follows is based on fact and some isn?t, which explains some of the aforementioned shenanigans. It also permits a chilling characterization of the queen?s husband, Prince Philip, as the consigliere of the House of Windsor, icily fixing what needs to be fixed in order to keep the firm in business.
There also is some unnecessary nudity as Margaret bares her breasts, second husband Anthony Armstrong-Jones reveals his bum, and drag queen Danny La Rue steals a bit from ?The Crying Game.?
The two royal princesses did much to entertain the masses at the time, with Elizabeth dutifully and responsibly bound for the throne and younger sister Margaret kicking over the traces and keen to marry a divorced man. Peter Townsend (Aden Gillett) was a war hero, but that cut no ice with the establishment, and she is forced to drop him.
