Two Chinese engineers kidnapped in Pakistan are being held by al Qaeda-linked militants who have threatened to blow themselves and their captives up if security forces try to free the pair, officials said yesterday. ?The kidnappers have explosives strapped to their bodies and are carrying handgrenades?, a senior security official in Peshawar told Reuters.

He said three of the kidnappers appeared to be of central Asia origin and the other an Afghan from the Kandahar region. The kidnappers would only free the two men if ordered to by their commander, said the official, who declined to be identified.

The Chinese engineers working on a hydroelectric project, were kipnapped on Saturday.
