Objective : reduce prevalence of diabetes
Diabetes appears as one of the top priorities of the ministry of Health this year. This is not surprising in view of the high prevalence of the disease among the population with one Mauritian out of five being affected. Next month, the ministry will launch the National Policy Strategy Framework for Diabetes comprising a number of short-term and longer-term measures. A protocol has already been launched to test the glycaemia rate in the blood and make sure the treatment prescribed corresponds to the glycaemia rate.
Among the shortest-term ones, the Health ministry wants to make sure that hospitals are adequately equipped to deal with consequences of the disease. For instance, each hospital will be granted a chiropodist to deal with feet complications and avoid amputations as far as possible. Likewise, eye complications ? a common feature of the diabetes ? will also be tackled more seriously. The purchase of appropriate equipment for more specific diagnostic in hospitals appears as a must to avoid complications. Each regional hospital will have a Diabetes Unit with specialists to deal with the disease including a dietician.
However, treatment of the disease is not enough to fight it. The Principal Medical Officer of the ministry of Health, Dr Keyvoobalan Pauvaday, is aware of this and intends to take appropriate measures. Among them, a national record for those suffering of diabetes will be launched. Moreover, the ministry will intensify its screening campaigns and talks to try and reduce the prevalence of the disease.
