● E-administration to become reality ? Towards paperless transactions. This is what the government aims at with the arrival of several services online within the next few weeks. The National Computer Board is getting ready for the launch of the e-administration to make lives of all citizens easier. Through the government portal ? www.gov.mu - the citizens will soon be able to take appointments for the fitness test as well as apply for jobs in the local administration among other services. But the main service ? which should be the one making citizens the most happy ? will certainly be in September when they will no longer have to queue up to submit their tax forms. All civil servants and employees of parastatal bodies will be allowed to use the Internet to take, fill in and submit their forms as from this year. Others will follow?
● A furious PM ? There was trouble in Parliament last Tuesday. The Sexual Offences Bill was once again in the middle of a controversy ? or at least the Select Committee that was being appointed to discuss the bill. The government members expressed their anger at the ?double language of the MMM that says it appreciates the PM?s move in Parliament and is then jubilant saying that the government has surrendered?. The PM made it clear that he could well withdraw the select committee if he wanted to? And the fury went to such an extent that he finally said, ?If this is the attitude of the MMM, they can go to hell.?
● Changes to driving licences ? Several changes will affect driving licences within the next two months. In view of the high number of accidents on our roads every year, the government has decided to take action. The first targets will be future drivers and those above 60. The new regulations will force all candidates to present a medical certificate. A young person will get a provisional driving licence that will become permanent after two years. He or she will also have to know the basics of mechanics. As for 60 year-olds, a medical certificate will be required every five years.
