New year starts on sad note for Jhurry family
Lallmatie village is still in a state of shock. It was the theatre of an odious double murder involving Indira Jhurry, 66, and her sister-in-law, Asha Jhurry, 56, in their home. A 23 year-old man was also discovered near the house where the two ladies were found dead; he was unconscious with a knife in his chest. The police are enquiring but have not shed light on this sordid case yet.
The whole village is wondering how two innocent women could have been so savagely attacked at their home last Thursday. Indira Jhurry’s husband, Atmanand, had been to Bel-Air-Rivière-Sèche, as he has become a taxi driver after retiring as a deputy head teacher. Indira was stabbed 28 times while her sister-in-law received 60 knife wounds.
While the police had initially thought the crime could be the result of a burglary, they are now changing their minds. The violence of the stabbing is leading them to believe that the motive for such a crime could have been revenge. Moreover, nothing was stolen from the house.
Eagerly waiting for Avinash’s version</B>
The police will also have to determine the circumstances of the assault of Avinash Ramguttee. Aged 23, the latter was found at Vinoba Lane, at Lallmatie, when they arrived on the scene. The young man was taken to the Flacq Hospital. After undergoing multiple surgery, he was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit of SSR hospital under close police surveillance. While it was first thought that Avinash had seen the attacker(s) and had been hurt when he was trying to chase him/them, the police are now waiting for his own account of events.
The victim actually gave two versions. In the first one, he stated that he was walking along Bharuth Lane when someone suddenly stabbed him without any reason. In the second one, he said that someone came behind him and caught him by the neck. Then he fainted but he said he remembered that, when he woke up, the man was pulling his shorts up. He asserted that the man had stabbed him when he started to chase him. This change of story has led to rumours that the young man could be involved in the double murder.
The police will certainly have a lot on their plates trying to unravel these mysterious attacks during the next few days. The more so as the victims’ relatives are shocked and traumatised; they really expect the police to find the perpetrators of the crimes.
