Mauritius has once again shown generosity towards the most needy. The Urdu Speaking Union, along with their well-wishers, have been able to collect Rs 300,000 which they contributed to the President?s Relief Fund for earthquake victims in Pakistan. The fund is an account especially established by Pakistan for the collection of aid internationally. ?It is only natural for our country ? small as we are ? to contribute in alleviating the miseries and sufferings of the people of Pakistan in view of our profound cultural ties,? highlighted Shehzad A Ahmed. During the earthquake that struck the sub-continent on the 8th of October last, ?Pakistan was the worst hit country with over 4 million people affected covering an area of 28,000 sq miles where it is believed that more than 150,000 people may have perished.? In fact, about 3 million people are still homeless and jobless and the problem could even worsen if nothing is done to help them. Winter is fast approaching and preliminary assistance ? food, winterised tents, blankets and health care - must reach the victims before there is another wave of death throughout the country. It is with this in mind that the Urdu Speaking Union mobilised all available resources throughout the country to send financial aid to the country.
