Major renovation work budgeted
Hospitals will at last get better treatment. The budget plans big investments in revamping and extending hospital buildings for a better service to patients. After years of promises and plans that have never become reality, work should finally start at Jeetoo Hospital within this financial year. Flacq, Rose-Belle and Victoria hospitals should follow suit and the cardiac centre of Pamplemousses will be extended.
Patients of Jeetoo Hospital have been complaining about the bad conditions and its dreary state for years. Even if Rs 18 million has been allocated to repairs in the Outpatients and the Accident and Emergency departments, the latter are still in an awful state. Likewise operating theatres are almost unusable with cracks in the walls and the threat of power cuts during interventions.
Jeetoo Hospital has been the subject of several surveys and studies since 1991 but nothing has been done so far. In 2004, the audit report mentioned no new building and not even any major repair. Rs 8 million has been paid by the African Development Bank as commitment fees since 2002 but the project has never moved forward.
New hospital in Port-Louis</B>
But this time seems to be the right time. After several meetings on work to be done at Jeetoo Hospital, the government has decided to allocate Rs 26 million to that effect. And the minister of Health, Satish Faugoo, asserts that there will be a new hospital in Port-Louis within the next four years.
The government also plans to make of Flacq Hospital a regional one with new departments – psychiatry and dialysis among others – for the sum of Rs 19 million. The Flacq and Rose-Belle hospitals will see the level of their dental and neonatal departments improved this year.
Rs 33 million will be allocated to renovation work and the purchase of high-tech equipment at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam hospital. As for Victoria Hospital, it will open a new central outpatients department next year. The building of a neuro-surgery unit, an intensive care unit and new operating theatres are also planned afterwards.
The increase in capacity of the cardiac centre of Pamplemousses was one of the previous government’s projects. But it never got anywhere because of the lack of a plot of land. The present government will take steps to make the project take off next year… The number of beds should go from 62 to 137 and the number of surgical operations from 500 to 800…
