At least 28 people killed in Nepal clashes
At least 28 people including 11 soldiers were killed in clashes between Maoist rebels and troops in Nepal, officials said yesterday.
Rebels shot dead 11 soldiers on Tuesday, when they were crossing a river in a remote jungle in the Sallyan district, a Maoist stronghold in western Nepal, defence official said.
Soldiers killed at least 11 rebels in the gun battle that followed, army spokesman Rajendra Thapa told Reuters. “We have some of our men missing after the battle,” he said. In another incident, soldiers shot dead six Maoists.
Violence has surged in Nepal despite the government’s call to restart peace talks to end the Maoist revolt in the impoverished Himalayan country. Peace talks with the rebels, fighting to topple the Hindu monarchy, have failed twice in the past.
