The week will be marked by the unveiling of plans to set up a family court in Mauritius. Pramila Patten, a lawyer, with the help of a UN specialist on the Convention against all forms of discrimination against women, has been entrusted with the task of writing a report on the implementation of such a court in Mauritius. She recommends that this independent court provide mediation, counselling and medical support. As soon as the report was completed last week, the lawyer started a series of consultations with organisations involved in family welfare. Today, she is meeting the attorney general, Rama Valayden, and they are holding a joint press conference on the issue. At the end of the week, she will submit to the government the report and a review of all her meetings with stakeholders. A Family Court Bill may well be introduced in the National assembly next year.
