Despite virulent argument between members of the government and those of the opposition, the DWC Bill was voted last Friday in Parliament. The deputy prime minister and minister of Public infrastructures, Rashid Beebeejaun, made it clear that the government had only implemented the recommendations of several reports. The Development Works Corporation (DWC) was highly indebted – Rs 450 million – and there was no other solution than to close it. Protests from opposition MPs would change nothing its decision.

Rashid Beebeejaun reminded the house that the DWC was set up by the Labour party but insisted that the government would not make it a political issue, as it is of national importance and interest. As for Nando Bodha, the decision to close the DWC is a “black chapter in the history of the Labour party”. He believes the DWC should have been restructured instead of being just closed down.

Many trade unionists attended the parliamentary sessions – probably worried about the fate of the employees of more than 50 years old. The government is proud of having relocated 182 employees aged less than 50. But the opposition made it clear they were worried about the others… Paul Bérenger proposed that the government offer a special additional package to these employees.

The DWC now belongs to the past… With its 450 million debts, it is obvious that no other decision could be made. It is time for all former employees and unionists to look towards the future…
