Edwards shuns sympathy votes
John Edwards denied suggestions yesterday that his presidential campaign was capitalizing on his wife’s illness as Elizabeth Edwards revealed that a bone scan had detected a new cancerous “hot spot” on her hip.
In a 60 Minutes interview yesterday, John Edwards said “not a single person in America” should vote for him because his wife has cancer.“Do not vote for us because you feel some sympathy or compassion for us. That would be an enormous mistake,” he said.
Elizabeth Edwards, meanwhile, revealed the cancer has spread to a small spot on her right hip, but she will forgo radiation there to avoid weakening the bone and risking a break.
Since their announcement last week that John Edwards would stay in the presidential race despite the discovery that his wife’s breast cancer had spread and become incurable, Elizabeth Edwards admitted the couple has been on a “real roller coaster.”
But the decision was based on assurances from doctors that she could participate fully in the campaign, as well as a refusal to give in to the disease and forfeit the possibility of serving in the White House.“Either you push forward with the things that you were doing yesterday or you start dying,” Elizabeth Edwards said.She added in the interview with Katie Couric: “That would be my legacy, wouldn’t it, Katie? That I’d taken out this fine man from – from the possibility of – of giving a great service. I mean, I don’t want that to be my legacy.”
John Edwards, a former senator and vice presidential candidate, said it was “entirely legitimate” for critics to call his decision to stay in the race “a case of insatiable ambition” over common sense.
“I mean, you offer yourself up for service to the country as the President of the United States, you deserve to be evaluated,” he said.
