More and more people want to help deprive climate change of its lifeblood, namely greenhouse gas emissions. Earth Hour 2008 is one of the more creative initiatives attempting to harness this outpouring of goodwill. But what exactly is it all about?

?Created to take a stand against the greatest threat our planet has ever faced, Earth Hour uses the simple action of turning off the lights for one hour to deliver a powerful message about the need for action on global warming. This simple act has captured the hearts and minds of people all over the world. As a result, at 8pm on 29th March 2008, millions of people in some of the world?s major capital cities, including Copenhagen, Toronto, Chicago, Melbourne, Brisbane and Tel Aviv will unite and switch off for Earth Hour.?

You too can participate in this global event by switching off your lights for an hour on Saturday night. You might also want to check out Earth Hour?s attractive website for tips on how to reduce your impact on climate change and to calculate your carbon footprint.

?Simple things like turning off appliances while not in use and switching your light globes to energy efficient bulbs, will all help us reach our goal of reducing our annual emissions by 5%. Even something as simple as turning out lights when you?re not in a room and switching to cleaner sources of electricity like ?green power?, make a big difference?, the website explains.
