?My impression after having been here for nearly two years is that, in the general scheme of things in education, there is not enough emphasis on the enjoyment, cultural, social, sportive and wider educational benefit of being at a school. It does not seem that anyone really seems to be trying to develop these activities meaningfully.

Since I have been able to visit other Mauritian schools, I have noticed that the children?s experience is very much in the classroom. There is not much outside the classroom that gives them the opportunity to grow in another dimension. Obviously, they are growing academically! But are they growing socially and physically?

People have to understand something; all children are very different from each other! All of them have different interests and different abilities! I personally think that, in every school, only 20% of the children are very good academically. Therefore, what about the other 80%? They can be reasonably good academically. However, would it not be good to find out in what other things they are good at?

I feel it would be necessary to create a structure within the schools to encourage children to practise sports and cultural activities. It would be nice if parents could encourage the children to be more involved in these activities. They could even attend some sportive events to encourage their children as the latter enjoy being watched and supported. The impact of extra-curricular activities within the school environment could be very beneficial to the kids. The performance of a child in his/her extra-curricular activities can overlap with the academic potential of that child. I am not saying Mauritian schools do not organize anything. They do! But they should do this much more often so that the modern child presents himself as a truly all-round individual in a world, which demands such attributes.?
