China historians meet to tackle painful past
Historians from Japan and China began a second round of talks on the nations? long and sometimes troubled history yesterday as a diplomatic furore simmered over Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe?s remarks on wartime brothels. The two-day meeting of 20 academics, 10 from each side, is expected to agree to take up sensitive subjects including the Nanjing Massacre for discussion in subcommittees, bilateral sources were quoted as saying.
The group aims to conclude the study with a report in 2008. It first met late last year in Beijing after Abe met Chinese President Hu Jintao in a fence-mending visit there in October.
