● SUSPECTED SERIAL RAPIST BEHIND BARS ? ?These are my two girlfriends,? said Jean-Daniel Selmour when the police was made aware that both girls had accused him of rape. The story of these two 13 year-old girls is quite similar although they do not know each other. They were each going to school in Port-Louis when they came across this 28 year-old man. According to them, Jean-Daniel Selmour had forced each of them to go in an abandoned building in Roche-Bois where he had raped them. One rape allegedly took place on Monday while the second one is said to have been committed on Tuesday. The suspect keeps denying the allegations but he is still provisionally detained.
● SALARY COMPENSATION BETWEEN RS 260 AND RS 400 ? Negotiations for the annual wage compensation are over. The employees will finally be paid a compensation ranging from Rs 260 to Rs 400 if the government applies the recommendation. It took two hours and a half for all partners of the National Pay Council to reach a consensus. It will represent a sum of around Rs 2.6 billion for the State and the Mauritius Employers Federation (MEF). While the MEF had proposed 5.5% and the trade unions 11%, the final proposal of the NPC looks like a consensus for a balance between problems raised by price hikes and the follow-up of reforms contained in last year?s budget.
● CONTROVERSIAL CT POWER ? The energy policy of the government is at the centre of a controversy. Just after the Private Notice Question to the minister of Public Utilities, Abu Kasenally, the leader of the Mauritian Militant Movement (MMM), Paul Bérenger, held a press conference to denounce the ?scandal of the century?. He referred to the project of a coal power station in Pointe-aux-Caves. The MMM leader wonders how the promoter, CT Power, could have received its letter of intent so rapidly from the Board of Investment ? the more so as a first negotiating panel had expressed reservations on the project. It was ?doubled by a so-called Equity/Coal Committee,? said Paul Bérenger.
