● EDUCATION. The long wait for Higher School Certificate results ends today. Result slips have finally arrived from Cambridge!

● CELEBRATION. On the occasion of Maha Shivahatree, to be held on the 16th of February, an official ceremony is taking place tomorrow, 13th of February in the presence of the Prime minister, Navin Ramgoolam, in Grand-Bassin. During the week, about 400,000 pilgrims will go to Grand-Bassin.

● HOW IS THE UNIVERSITY FINANCED? The university benefits from subsidies from the government. Moreover, all students doing a bachelor?s degree must pay registration fees of Rs 10 000. As for those taking postgraduate courses, they pay tuition fees of Rs 60 000 every year.

● WHY IS IT IN SUCH A DIFFICULT SITUATION? There has been an increase in current expenses and government subsidies are not enough to cover them anymore ? the more so as the government has recently decided to review the subsidies downwards. In addition to this, the number of students has decreased.

● HOW WILL IT FACE THE PROBLEM? Both the ministry of Education and the Tertiary Education Commission are looking for ways of helping the university. An extension of the budget might be allocated. The university is also thinking of making students pay fees even for a bachelor?s degree but students have already started to protest against this plan. Research and consultancy may also be a niche to be developed by the university.
