<B>The economicterrorists</B>
?Zordi, mem portail ki mete pou protez ou lakaz ou bizin proteze : sa osi zot pe kokin ! Kot nou pe ale?
This is an affirmation from an opposition politician. While this statement seems hilarious in itself, it drives shivers down the spine. For somebody reading this from outside of Mauritius. It also conveys the wrong signal.
The fact remains, though, that this statement is embedded with truth from newspapers coverage we have been having on road signs disappearing, historical monuments carried away, and steel bars and electric wires looted from sites.
To me this scenario resolves in a market situation, which, by definition, is a sum total of a buyer, a seller and a price. If we have a seller in the person of the looters and there is a price?. there should a buyer.
For the bad this whole market situation is causing, there should be heavy punishment for all parties involved, especially the buyer who is inciting malpractices, and we may have a good guess on who these buying party(ies) may be.
Other than gambling with our heritage, monuments, road signs, comes the livelihood itself. Tourist attacks. Rapes on tourists. Thefts on bungalows. This is undermining the essence of an economic pillar we are banking on. I certainly from here cannot promote my country as a paradise, the carefree, open-door, relaxed, courteous island. Too much is at stake.
Is it not time that serious people mobilise and confront these issues as one common front? Punish whoever is threatening our livelihood with harsh punishment because they are economic terrorists?
