The investigations director Roshi Bhadain’s resignation from the Independent Commission against Corruption (Icac) was actually a “dismissal in disguise”. The reasons that he and the Icac board mentioned to explain his departure appeared unclear: he said he had had a better opportunity abroad while other sources explained he was “fed up with the system”. Even though he denies it, several elements tend to show that he was asked to give up his post.

Roshi Bhadain is said to have unilaterally decided to transfer some 30 employees in April before the end of their contract. Among these, there were 12 police officers involved in important investigations. Even though it is uncertain if these hurried dismissals are at the origin of his own dismissal, the board met Roshi Bhadain on 2nd June in the presence of his lawyer, Yousuf Mohamed.

Soon after this meeting, Roshi Bhadain announced he was leaving because he had been offered a job as “investigator at the international civil court of The Hague in the Netherlands” or “greater perspectives abroad”. Asked if he resigned or was dismissed, he answered: “I don’t understand why I’m being hounded like this. You can check with Indira Manrakhan and other members of the board and they will confirm why I am leaving. I have not been dismissed.”
