One of Australia biggest retailers on Monday said it will launch court action against a think-tank which accused it of using sexually provocative photographs of children in its advertising.

David Jones, Australia’s second-largest department store chains, was accused by the left-wing Australia Institute last October of using overly sexual photos of teenagers in advertising in a paper entitled “Corporate Paedophilia: sexualising children by advertising and marketing”.

The institute pointed to sale catalogue photos used by David Jones, known as “DJ’s” to Australians, and another major retail chain, Myers, showing girls with flowers in their hair and dressed in loose summer clothing.

“When family department stores show no conscience on these issues, or are inured to the effects of their behaviour, the situation is very unhealthy,” the institute said. David Jones said it would lodge legal action in Australia’s Federal Court on Tuesday and denied exploiting children.

The retailer had been accused of doing “something that we regard as abhorrent,” chief executive Mark McInnes told local media. Australia’s journalists’ union said the action was an assault on free speech by one of the country’s biggest corporates. “This is a blatant attack on the freedom of the press to canvass important issues, and an affront to independent, critical thought,” Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance Secretary Christopher Warren said.
