La précédente lettre conjointe de la Grande-Bretagne et des Etats-Unis fait suite à une rencontre ayant eu lieu, le jeudi 23 juin, entre Patrick F. Kennedy, Under Secretary for Management at the US Department of State, et Neil Wigan, Africa Director at the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office, et sir Anerood Jugnauth. C’est le bureau du Premier ministre qui le fait ressortir dans un communiqué publié le vendredi 24 juin. Fait qui retient l’attention: sir Anerood Jugnauth tient ferme quant à sa position sur la souveraineté des Chagos.

«He (le Premier ministre, NdlR) reaffirmed that Mauritius does not recognise the so-called “British Indian Ocean Territory” which the UK purported to create by illegally excising the Chagos Archipelago from the territory of Mauritius prior to its accession to independence, in violation of international law and United Nations General Assembly resolutions», peut-on lire dans ce communiqué.

Plus loin, sir Anerood Jugnauth réagit directement à la «menace» faite précédemment par la Grande-Bretagne et les Etats-Unis concernant les relations bilatérales entre Maurice et les deux pays. Pour le Premier ministre, cette «menace» est «hostile et totalement inacceptable».

«The Rt Hon Prime Minister also made it clear to Mr Kennedy and Mr Wigan that Mauritius considered the threat from the US and the UK that the request for an Advisory Opinion from the ICJ would cause lasting damage to the bilateral relations of Mauritius with both the US and the UK to be hostile and totally unacceptable and in breach of their obligations under international law», précise le service de presse du bureau du Premier ministre.
