The Storm Within

À l’heure du tout à l’image et du buzz sans suite, «l’express» souhaite faire découvrir la plume de poètes, de chanteurs, d’écrivains et de tous ceux qui jettent leur âme sur le papier, et qui mettent en mots des réflexions profondes.
While waking, my eyes twitched.
While rising, my body coiled like a serpent.
While standing, the pain roared.
’Twas not a bullet,
but a river of blood –
lost, wandering,
refusing to follow its rightful course.
The fish swam on
until they found their corals,
clinging to places
where they were never meant to be.
The sea appeared calm,
but deep beneath its surface,
it raged louder than ever.
Trapped eggs were hurled within,
a bruised uterus aching,
its pain spilling into its neighbours,
reaching beyond the body,
beyond the world,
beyond the heavens themselves.
The breeze may feel comforting,
but beneath it lies a silence
deeper than anyone can hear.
And when the storm begins,
everything collapses.
This is the reality of endometriosis –
a storm that rages within,
a battle fought beneath the skin,
while the world sees
only calm.

Sharfaa Ahamudally
As someone living with endometriosis, this 19-year-old student at Loreto Curepipe wants to use her love for writing to raise universal awareness about the condition and shed light on the physical and emotional challenges it can bring. She really hopes that this poem can make others better understand and participate in the journey of those who are struggling with it.
