Jared Endale : «Mauritius can serve as a gateway for modern payment solutions into both African and international markets»

Jared Endale, Head of Visa Eastern Africa and Country Manager for Ethiopia.

The launch of Apple Pay in Mauritius through Visa and MCB Group marks a new step in the country’s digital payments journey. The head of Visa Eastern Africa discusses the significance of this launch and the opportunities for Mauritius to strengthen its role as a regional digital payment’s hub.

? From Visa’s perspective, what does the launch of Apple Pay with MCB Group signal about the evolution and maturity of the Mauritian digital payments ecosystem?

It reflects the growing maturity and sophistication of Mauritius’ payments ecosystem. It signals a market that has moved beyond basic digital adoption to embracing globally interoperable, secure and user-centric payment experiences. From Visa’s perspective, this is an important step in aligning Mauritius with leading global markets where consumers increasingly expect seamless, contactless and wallet-based payments as part of everyday life. It also highlights the strength of the local ecosystem – forwardlooking financial institutions, supportive infrastructure and digitally engaged consumers – all working together to enable innovation to scale in a meaningful way.

? How important are longterm banking partnerships in accelerating secure and scalable payment innovation in smaller but strategically important markets such as Mauritius?

Long-term relationships with banking partners are foundational to delivering secure and scalable innovation, particularly in markets like Mauritius where trust, reliability and local relevance are critical. Partnerships such as the one with MCB Group allow us to move beyond individual product launches and focus instead on building sustainable digital ecosystems. Through close collaboration, we can align global technologies with local market needs, accelerate time-to-market and ensure that solutions meet the highest standards of security and performance. In smaller but strategically important markets, this depth of partnership is often what enables innovation to move from concept to everyday consumer reality.

? Consumers increasingly expect payments to be instant, seamless and secure. What role does Visa play behind the scenes in enabling technologies such as Apple Pay, particularly in terms of security, tokenisation and global interoperability?

Visa plays a critical role behind the scenes in enabling solutions like Apple Pay. At the core of this is tokenisation, where a card number is replaced with a unique digital token. This means sensitive payment details are never shared with merchants or stored on devices, significantly enhancing security while maintaining a smooth payment experience. In parallel, Visa’s global network ensures that transactions initiated via Apple Pay can be accepted by millions of merchants worldwide, with the same reliability and speed consumers expect. In essence, Visa provides the underlying infrastructure that allows digital wallets to operate securely and consistently across markets.

? Digital wallets are reshaping consumer behaviour and commerce. How do you see solutions such as Apple Pay contributing to economic modernisation, financial inclusion and the growth of digital commerce in Mauritius?

Digital wallets like Apple Pay are reshaping the way consumers engage with commerce by moving payments further into the background of everyday interactions. In Mauritius, this has several important implications. First, it supports economic modernisation by enabling faster and more efficient transactions across sectors, from retail and transport to tourism. Second, it helps expand digital commerce by reducing friction at checkout, whether in-store or online. Over time, these solutions can also contribute to broader financial inclusion by making secure digital payments more accessible and intuitive, particularly for digitally active consumers and small businesses seeking to participate more fully in the digital economy. Visa operates at the intersection of global technology trends and local financial ecosystems.

? Looking ahead, what opportunities do you see for Mauritius to further position itself as a forward-looking payments and financial services hub within the Indian Ocean and African regions?

Mauritius is well positioned to further strengthen its role as a forward-looking payments and financial services hub within the Indian Ocean and across Africa. There are clear opportunities to deepen the adoption of advanced payment technologies such as contactless and tokenised payments, as well as digital wallets. The country can also expand into areas such as cross-border commerce, digital identity and value-added services for businesses. Given its strong regulatory environment, openness to innovation and strategic geographic position, Mauritius can serve as a gateway for modern payment solutions into both African and international markets. For Visa, this presents an opportunity to continue working closely with partners to bring global innovation to the local market, while supporting Mauritius in scaling its capabilities as a trusted and connected digital economy.
