Independence Day

Khadijah Manjoo.

À l’heure du tout à l’image et du buzz sans suite, «l’express» souhaite faire découvrir la plume de poètes, de chanteurs, d’écrivains et de tous ceux qui jettent leur âme sur le papier en cette fête de l’Indépendance.

Flags are raised up in the morning sky,

Red like our ancestors’ blood who fought high.

Blue like our oceans, wide and free,

Yellow like the sunrise, hope we see.

Green like cane fields after rain,

All voices join in one refrain.

People march with steps so proud,

Hope is present in the crowd.

Faith and culture weave our shared tradition,

Unity blooms beyond creed and religion.

Even though our island is small,

Mauritius unites us all.

Bio

Khadijah Manjoo

A 23-year-old BA (Hons) English Studies student at the University of Mauritius, she has always found comfort and expression in literature and reading, while also enjoying video games in her spare time. Diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 2014, she hopes her journey reminds others living with diabetes that the condition should never stop them from achieving their dreams. Fun fact: this poem was originally written for a class presentation!
