What you should know ?
● What is the SADC International Consultative Conference on Poverty and Development?
The Southern African Development community (SADC) conference last week-end on the theme ?Regional Economic Integration: a strategy for poverty eradication towards sustainable development?, provided a platform for SADC, International Cooperating Partners, civil society and the private sector to engage in dialogue and focus on this burning issue.
● What is the relevance of this conference?
The decision to hold this conference was taken at the SADC summit in Lesotho in August 2006 on a proposal by Mauritius because poverty remains a major challenge facing the SADC region. 40% of its population live in abject poverty reflected by malnutrition, illiteracy, disease, HIV-aids, etc.
● What is the SADC?s road map?
SADC?s strategy to eradicate poverty and reach sustainable development is through regional economic integration. This means economic policy reforms to enhance business development and deeper integration into the regional and global economy.
● What are the main hurdles?
Prospects of economic growth have been low and recent events like soaring food and energy prices, climatic changes with floods and droughts and the diversion of food into energy production have made it worse for poverty-stricken countries.
● Are there any ways out of this predicament?
The road is not an easy one. It needs commitments from all quarters: from international cooperation to regional solidarity and national efforts to reduce poverty before it becomes a threat to security, already felt in some countries.
