What you should know ?
A United Nations report puts Mauritius in 65th place in terms of Human Development. Is this a good rank?
Mauritius is 65th out of 177 countries and thus has a better index than most other sub-Saharan countries. It is now considered as being among the High Human Development countries, which means that it has made some progress compared with its previous results in 2005. However, Mauritius has quite a poor performance compared to other countries in its new category ? the High Human Development group of countries.
What are the factors that explain the improvement in its performance?
The report states that Mauritius has been consistent in the human development of all its citizens over the past fifteen years. The life expectancy of Mauritians has risen by three years for instance. The Growth Domestic Product increased by 74 %, the literacy rate by 5 % and access to education by 17 % (comprising primary, secondary and tertiary education). Mauritius is 27th as far as poverty is concerned out of 108 developing countries.
Why has the United Nations Development Programme chosen ?climate change? as the main theme of its report?
Climate change is considered as the main threat for human development ? and is expected to affect developing countries most.It could reverse all the progress already made.
