Interim Report
RACE 1 - THE NATIONAL HORSERACING AUTHORITY TROPHY
Tambour Battant and Destination came together at the start with Destination losing ground. Colby hesitated at the start. Rue Royale and Road Rover came together at the start, Rue Royale then rolled in, brushing the hindquarters of St. Nicholas. Lone Star Park over-raced in the middle stages. Road Rover raced wide from the 500 metres, then lay out in the home straight finishing wide on the track. Rounding the home turn Intrusion was awkward on the hindquarters of a tiring Lone Star Park. The Stewards questioned trainer S. Ramdour and jockey Joorawon in relation to the handling of Destination. Trainer Ramdour explained that he instructed jockey Joorawon from an inside barrier to endeavour to jump well and position the gelding just off the pace. Jockey Joorawon confirmed these instructions and explained after receiving some interference at the start he got further back than he would have wished, however he was reluctant to put pressure on his mount to go forward as in the past the gelding, when pushed, was inclined to over-race. Trainer Ramdour, after viewing the videos, accepted that after being slow to begin, it was in the best interest of Destination not to be pressured as in the past it has over-raced. The Club?s Veterinary Surgeon reported that Dougan returned with a deep laceration to the near hind tendon.
RACE 2 - THE PHUMELELA GOLD ENTERPRISES TROPHY
Royal Lineage jumped awkwardly, shifted out, brushing Jose Mourinho. In A Heart Beat knuckled at the start. Sardonyx, when being steadied shortly after the start, raced ungenerously, throwing its head. Shortly after the start Sardonyx rolled out onto Big Port. Superagente raced wide in the middle stages. At the 600 metres Big Port was awkward when close to the heels of In A Heart Beat. Sardonyx raced wide from the 500 metres. Approaching the home turn Jose Mourinho was awkward when close to the hindquarters of Major League, Jose Mourinho then rolled out onto Royal Lineage. At the 300 metres Big Port was held up when unable to improve between Sardonyx and Superagente. Big Port was then taken wide rounding the home turn to continue going forward. At the 250 metres Turtleback steadied when awkward on the heels of In A Heart Beat. At the 150 metres, In A Heart Beat lay in and was awkward on the hindquarters of Collect The Cash. Leaving the 150 metres Royal Lineage was held up when disappointed for a run between Ay Tee Em and Collect The Cash. Royal Lineage was then taken to the inside of Ay Tee Em. The Stewards questioned jockey Whitmore in relation to the disappointing performance of Jose Mourinho. He explained from an inside barrier, he enjoyed a good run on the fence in a forward position but down the back straight after receiving some crowding from Ay Tee Em was inclined to race ungenerously, then approaching the home turn was held up when unable to improve from behind Major League and in the home straight, although obtaining clear running, did not run on as expected and was disappointing. Jockey Woodworth, rider of Sardonyx, explained that he was instructed to go back further in the early stages and endeavour to settle the gelding. However, down the back straight the gelding commenced to over-race, got its head up and refused to settle and hung out. Jockey Rama, rider of Collect The Cash, explained from an awkward barrier he was able to position outside the leader, then rounding the home turn commenced to give ground and on straightening was inconvenienced when Astrakhan rolled out but in the home straight was very disappointing. A subsequent veterinary examination of the horse revealed it to be lame on the near fore leg. The Club?s Veterinary Surgeon reported that Big Port was lame on the near hind leg. Trainers of Collect The Cash and Big Port were told that these horses will need a veterinary certificate of soundness before being allowed to race again.
RACE 3 - THE RACING ASSOCIATION TROPHY
Umhlanga jumped awkwardly. Da Lad was slow to begin. At the 1250 metres, jockey Herholdt, rider of Leatherman, momentarily lost the use of his near-side rein and when re-gathering had to steady from the heels of Gold Guild. Oisin Breeze raced wide in the early stages until being taken to the lead at the 900 metres. Umhlanga was taken wide approaching and rounding the home turn. Leaving the 200 metres Dandy Rouge had to be taken to the inside of Da Lad to continue going forward, then at the 100 metres had to steady off the hindquarters of Leatherman which rolled out. At the 150 metres Da Lad rolled on onto Born Leader.
RACE 4 - THE GOLD CIRCLE CHALLENGE TROPHY
Ndabeni, which was fractious in the barriers, was slow to begin. Harvest Time was slow to begin. One For The Road jumped awkwardly. For some distance approaching and leaving the 900 metres African Ambassador over-raced and hung out. Rounding the home turn Heliotrope shifted out onto Stormy Boy. The Stewards questioned trainer V. Allet and jockey Joorawon in relation to the handling of African Ambassador. Trainer Allet explained that from an awkward barrier he instructed Joorawon to endeavour to lead, however if unable to lead to race handy. Jockey Joorawon explained after jumping well he put pressure on his mount to go forward and leaving the 1200 metres was able to race outside the leader, however when being steadied shortly after African Ambassador commenced to over-race, hung out and proved difficult to ride. Down the back straight, after being steadied, African Ambassador commenced to race more tractably such that approaching the 600 metres he endeavoured to go forward and clear One For The Road. However, jockey Brown maintained the inside running, as such he was unable to cross. After this, although challenging, initially commenced to give ground from the 100 metres and was disappointing. After consideration, jockey Joorawon pleaded guilty to a charge under Rule 161 (f) for, without good cause, failing to ride African Ambassador to the satisfaction of the Stewards, the particulars being that from approaching the 600 metres he put undue pressure on his mount in an attempt to clear One For The Road, which he was unable to do so. Jockey Joorawon was fined Rs 20,000.
RACE 5 - THE Connolly & Turner Bloodstock DUKE OF YORK CUP
Chief Warrior and Joshua Tree were slow to begin. Molten jumped awkwardly, throwing its head. Tabascorez jumped awkwardly, shifted ground, brushing Jumpin Joshua. At the 1400 metres Molten was awkward when close to the heels of Tabascorez which was being steadied to take a position behind London Del. Molten then rolled in, crowding Joshua Tree. For some distance after this, Tabascorez over-raced when close to the heels of London Del. At the 900 metres Tabascorez was awkward when close to the heels of London Del. Molten then steadied away from Tabascorez and, when doing so, shifted ground, carrying Joshua Tree wider on the track. Approaching the 700 metres Men Of Rheims, when being taken to the outside of Jumpin Joshua, brushed London Del with these two horses then racing tight for some distance. After consideration, jockey Boutanive (Men Of Rheims) was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under Rule 161 (c) for applying undue pressure on London Del when taking his mount to the outside of Cavendish. Jockey Boutanive was suspended from riding in races for one race meeting. Joshua Tree raced wide approaching and rounding the home turn. At the 150 metres Chief Warrior was taken to inside of Jumpin Joshua to continue going forward and, shortly after, had to be steadied when Jumpin Joshua rolled in. Chief Warrior then had some difficulty obtaining clear running for the remainder of the race. Approaching the 100 metres Cavendish rolled out slightly, at the same time Molten, which was improving, shifted in, these two horses coming together and becoming unbalanced. Jockey Hatt was warned to exercise more care. Approaching the 100 metres Elizondo had to be steadied when close to the heels of Made Of Money. Elizondo was then unable to obtain clear running for the remainder of the race.
RACE 6 - THE BLOODSTOCK SOUTH AFRICA TROPHY
Cazam, which was standing awkwardly in the barriers, brushed Maison de Paris upon jumping. For some considerable distance approaching the 1300 metres Blackwatch over-raced. Blackwatch continue to over-race in the middle stages. Maison de Paris was taken wide from the 400 metres. Rounding the home turn Cazam, which was racing tight on the inside of Maison de Paris, had to steady from the heels of Blackwatch. Jockey Brown, rider of Blackwatch, explained that his mount was inclined to over-race in the early and middle stages, then from the 400 metres he commenced to make ground to challenge upon straightening but in the home straight failed to accelerate and was disappointing.
RACE 7 - THE PHUMELELA GAMING & LEISURE TROPHY
Woden jumped awkwardly. Go The Roman was slow into stride. Strike Force raced wide in the early stages. At the 1500 metres Go The Roman steadied when awkward on the inside of Golden Rambo. Woden was taken wide from the 500 metres. At the 400 metres Go The Roman and Woden brushed. On straightening Hero?s Hope rolled out, inconveniencing Modern Mission.
RACE 8 - THE SEA WARRIOR PLATE
Trade Wind jumped awkwardly, brushing the hindquarters of Real Schlep. As a result of this, Real Schlep was turned sideways, shifted ground, crowding Trade Wind onto Russian Marriage with Russian Marriage then being steadied when awkward on the inside of Eastern Exodus. At the start Te Atatu and Cross Patch came together, Cross Patch then rolled out. Four Wood knuckled upon jumping, shifted ground, crowding Voodoo Child. Shortly after the start Eastern Exodus lay in crowding Russian Marriage. Multi Dimention slipped behind upon jumping. Leaving the 1300 metres Four Wood rolled in, brushing Real Schlep. At the 1200 metres Real Schlep steadied from the heels of Te Atatu then rolled out, brushing Eastern Exodus. Jockey Joorawon, rider of Real Schlep, pleaded guilty to contravening Rule 158 (5) for, without good cause, failing to ride his mount out to the finish of the race, costing his mount 3rd position. He was fined Rs 10,000. The Club?s Veterinary Surgeon reported that Trade Wind was lame on the off fore leg. In view of this, trainer P. Merven was told that Trade Wind will need a veterinary certificate of soundness before being allowed to race again.
