Reviving pupils? interest in mathematics
Thirteen local students distinguished themselves in the Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC). The Australian High Commissioner, Cathe-rine Johnstone, hosted a ceremony in their honour yesterday afternoon at her residence. Most of those who were awarded High Distinctions and Awards were from Royal College Port-Louis and Royal College Curepipe. One student from Ramsundur Prayag SSS and another one from Sir Leckraz Teelock SSS also found their places among the prizewinners of this international competition.
The AMC, administered by the non-profit making Australian Mathematics Trust, allows students to attempt the same tasks on the same day in about 40 countries. Question papers are prepared by volunteers of various professional societies in Australia and the ?problem creators and moderators include the most experienced mathematics educators,? according to the High Commission.
This competition, launched almost thirty years ago in 1978, is aimed at highlighting the importance of mathematics as a curriculum subject, giving students an opportunity to discover their talent for mathematics and providing resources for the classroom and general discussion.
In Mauritius, statistics tend to demonstrate that pupils show a decreasing interest in scientific subjects. This competition may well help revive this interest as the type of problems posed uses mathematics as a way of solving problems in the real world to which students can relate. Unlike formal examinations in mathematics, this competition helps them see the relevance of the subject to their everyday lives.
Moreover, the event is conducted in a pressure-free environment and the questions are designed to be of sufficient interest to stimulate discussion even outside the classroom. The fun aspect of the competition can inspire a greater interest in the subject and a love for learning. The AMC also provides a report for each student to indicate their performance and point at their strengths and weaknesses.
