STOP TO THE BOOK CONTROVERSY. The turmoil over the books written by James Burty David seems over. These books will no longer be compulsory, as decided by the ministry of Education. Schools will not have to use just ?recommended? books but can also choose from the reference ones. The difference between the two lists is that books on the recommended list were to be subsidised for needy students while the others were not. The ministry has finally authorised that all books be replaced without problem for any student. After some schools boycotted the list of recommended books, the situation became even more serious when members of the French selection panel resigned last week stating, ?Changes were brought to the list without our being informed.?

No more milk ?ordeal?. The minister of Women and Consumer protection, Indira Seebun, has reassured consumers that the ordeal concerning the milk should be over very soon. According to the data of the ministry of Trade, 275 tons of milk have been received on Wednesday morning and 1,100 more tons are expected in October. ?The monthly consumption of milk is about 850 tons so we should have an excess of milk,? said Indira Seebun. Consumers will, however, need to be cautious about prices and inform the Consumer Protection Unit if they suspect anything wrong.

MRA HUNTS DOWN FAKE ACCOUNTS. MRA hunts down fake accounts ? The Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA) wants to track bad debtors. It will launch an enquiry to get the names of all those using false names to open accounts and avoid paying taxes on bank interests. All banks now have to declare the interests of their customers and it should not be difficult for the MRA to relate to the persons involved. Banks involved in such frauds will have to justify themselves with the Bank of Mauritius, as they are supposed to abide by strict regulations when customers open accounts. The MRA suspects this affects a hundred people including politicians, businessmen and professionals.
